"Jean D. Carruthers, M.D., is Clinical Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where she specializes in facial cosmetic surgery. In 1987 with her husband, Dr. Alastair Carruthers, pioneered the cosmetic use of botulinum A exotoxin ("Botox") that has since grown to become the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the world." [TEDxVancouver] We never said that Botox doesn't work. But, at what price? What are the side effects? Botox Boxed Warning Dr. Carruthers is a passionate doctor who genuinely wants to improve the lives of her patients. Our guess is that she never imagined that botulinum would end up talking over the ophthalmology and dermatology world. Her TEDx lecture talks about how she and her husband pioneered the use of botulinum, first for blepharospasm (abnormal blinking and spasms of the eyelids) and then for cosmetic use. Dr. Carruthers has been injecting herself with botulinum since 1987. Her own words state, "I haven't frowned since 1987." It was during her and her husband's pursuit to test the cosmetic effects of botulinum that she "did the logical thing..we injected, me." We believe that: Botox damages EVERY person EVERY time. It becomes a matter of degrees. At best, it “just” permanently damages the nerves. At worse, it causes botulism which can be fatal or result in permanent disability. Botox has a summation effect, so when people get stricken with a debilitating condition out of the blue, they don’t think it is the Botox because nothing bad happened the first 5 or 10 injections. Just like when you swing an ax to chop down a tree, the first few whacks don’t seem to affect it..then TIMBER! That’s how Botox poisons the body- slowly. In other cases, if the injection hits a blood vessel- INADVERTENT BOTULISM is caused. (This risk is clearly outlined in the boxed warning above.) This is when the toxin is spread systematically throughout the entire body and organs. This can result in muscle fatigue or progress to full blown botulism, complete with respiratory collapse and cardiac fatalities. [-S. Bravo] We can only speculate at the health of Dr. Carruthers. We truly hope that she is well. Please watch the video in its entirety, and leave a comment below of what you think.
